Burren Bench

Functional sculpture · 3D-printed concrete

The project

A landscape
fragment.

A functional sculpture occupied by both people and plants.

I began developing Burren Bench while living at the edge of the Burren in the west of Ireland. I was looking for a form suited to 3D-printed concrete, and my familiarity with the landscape led me to its clints and grikes: limestone blocks separated by deep fissures.

I started by modelling a fragment of karst landscape, then gradually adjusted its undulations into seating. The fissures became pockets for planting, allowing people and plants to inhabit the same piece.
